ARTS IN PRISON, EAST HILLS SINGERS
The East Hill Singers is a choir of inmates from the Lansing Penitentiary, joined by volunteers from the outside.  It seeks to develop cooperation, friendship, self-esteem, discipline, joy, and hope through music-making.  It is one way to “visit those in prison” as Jesus advocated in Matthew 25:31-46.

A handful of men from Southern Hills have been singing with this choir for several years.  They go to rehearsals in the prison one evening a month, and rehearsals for the volunteers in Kansas City on the first Monday evening of each month.  They perform 2 concerts each January and 2 each June, in various churches in Kansas City, Lawrence, or Topeka .  Those involved find it a rewarding experience.  Any men who sing would be welcome to join the group.

A similar program has recently resumed at the Topeka Women’s Prison.  A few women from SHMC were involved previously, but no one is currently.  A retired choral director from Wichita State University is directing the group.  They rehearse one night a week.  If anyone (male or female) is interested in singing with them, contact the church for more information
